Why am I seeing an alert for irregular heartbeat?

The irregular heartbeat alert may appear when your blood pressure monitor detects an irregularity in your heartbeat or pulse during a reading. This alert does not provide a diagnosis. Movement, talking, sound, or vibration during a reading may affect the monitor’s sensor.

The symbol on the monitor for irregular heartbeat depends on your blood pressure monitor model (this can be verified on the back of the monitor):

  1. Zewa UAM-906HH: Three heart symbols stacked on top of one another.
  2. HoMedics HHBPA-100BT: A shaking heart symbol with a pulse line next to it.

You may also see an irregular heartbeat indication with the reading in the Hello Heart app.

What should I do when I see the alert?

Take another blood pressure reading while sitting quietly and keeping your body still.

Before taking the new reading:

  1. Unplug the cuff tube from the side of the blood pressure monitor.
  2. Reconnect the cuff tube.
  3. Press it firmly into the monitor to make sure it is fully connected.
  4. Try to take the blood pressure reading in a quiet area. Significant sound or vibration may affect the monitor’s sensor.
  5. Sit quietly and follow the instructions in the following article: How do I take my blood pressure?
  6. Do not talk or move while the monitor is taking your reading.

What should I do if the alert appears often?

If the irregular heartbeat alert appears often, discuss it with your healthcare provider. They can review your readings and answer questions about your heart health or medical treatment.

When you see the alert, you will have two options to respond with. If you select “I’m managing this, thanks”, you may receive a follow up note expressing that the alert will be skipped in the future. Pressing that option will not permanently disable the feature.

The irregular blood pressure alert will still reflect on the blood pressure monitor, on a banner at the top of the Today tab, and you will still be notified after adding a reading in the app. It can also be found when viewing your reading summary.
